Notes from Kegan: Constructive Cognition

from Sean

Lia and I were great friends in grad school in the 1990s. We've stayed in touch over the years but I was surprised when she contacted me. I'm honored to think that she would ask for my opinion about her situation.

I am artist and art educator. I work with college and grad students who are in art schools, with professional artists who want to acquire specific technical training, and with preservice art and general education teachers. My research is looking at how teachers learn to teach with 21st Century emerging digital technologies, including the Internet, 3D printers, video and computer animation, and other social networking technologies.

During this course I've spent some time thinking about the implications of Kegan's work on adult development, particularly his ideas about consciousness as a way of thinking. I find that these ideas resonate with the work I've been doing over the past several years, both as an individual artist and as a teacher.

“Though not overly concerned with how others perceive them, [self-authoring knowers] welcome feedback that can help them become more effective. The self-authoring knower participates to keep learning and growing as a person.”
